Tyler James Elliott
was born a beautiful, healthy baby boy on April 10, 1996. At three
months old, Tyler started having breathing difficulties and was
admitted to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for tests. Test
results showed that he had acquired a very rare lung disease and the
only cure was a double lung transplant. After seven months in the
hospital, (six months in intensive care) our brave little boy
received a second chance at life on January 14, 1997 when donor
lungs became available. The surgery was a success and Tyler was
finally able to go home. A transplant is not a total cure and life for him was not easy. He had frequent hospital admissions, daily medications and breathing treatments to take. Despite all that he had been through, Tyler was a remarkably strong willed little boy. He possessed talents that amazed most people who met him. When his parents took him to the driving range to hit golf balls, a crowd never failed to gather around him, as he would hit the ball 50, 60, even 80 yards. They would be in awe, not only impressed by his natural talent, but by the fact that he had been through so much in the first year of his life. Aside from golf, Tyler also loved hockey. He carried his hockey stick with him everywhere he went. He especially liked the Philadelphia Flyers and was even given the chance to meet some of the players. He loved wearing his Flyer’s jersey; the team’s colors being orange and black. Tyler’s family adopted the orange and black monarch butterfly as a symbol for him, his courage, and his spirit. Although three more years definitely was not enough, we are grateful for the time we did have with him. On July 15, 2000, Tyler passed away from transplant related complications. His memory will live on with us by holding the annual Together for Tyler Memorial Golf Tournament, which benefits children related charities.
